The Second Voice Change: The Aging Voice

A Lecture and Workshop for Singers, Choirs, Choral Professionals, and Voice Teachers

How long can I sing?

It is a question aging singers think about but rarely ask out loud. As we age, our voices change. Notes that once felt effortless may require more work. Vocal stamina can decrease. Range, tone, and flexibility may shift in unexpected ways.

The good news is that these changes are normal.

In The Second Voice Change: The Aging Voice, conductor, educator, and author Donald Milton III explores what happens to the singing voice as we age and, more importantly, how singers can adapt to those changes. Through a combination of science, practical vocal strategies, and real-world experience, participants learn how to continue singing with confidence, health, and joy throughout their lives.

Rather than focusing on decline, this presentation focuses on possibility. Many of the challenges associated with aging are not caused by the changes themselves, but by singers attempting to use their voices the way they did decades earlier. By understanding how the voice wants to function now, singers can continue to make music for years to come.

Ideal Audiences

  • Amateur singers interested in vocal longevity
  • Community choruses
  • Choirs in houses of worship
  • Senior and lifelong-learning programs
  • Music conferences and workshops

While especially valuable for singers over 55, the presentation is appropriate for singers and teachers of all ages.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand the physical changes that occur in the aging voice
  • Learn why vocal stamina, range, and tone may change over time
  • Explore practical strategies for maintaining vocal health
  • Identify ways to adapt technique to changing vocal needs
  • Discover how to find the most functional and expressive parts of their current voice
  • Gain confidence in continuing to sing throughout their lives

For Choral Directors and Voice Teachers

Many conductors and teachers spend much of their careers working with aging singers. We are familiar with the symptoms: decreased stamina, wider vibrato, breathiness, pitch instability, and difficulty accessing certain parts of the range.

What is missing is a framework for helping singers understand these changes without fear.

This presentation gives singers language for discussing their experiences, practical tools for adapting to change, and reassurance that they are not alone. Directors and teachers leave with a deeper understanding of the aging voice and strategies they can immediately apply in rehearsals and lessons.
